How do I know what kind of USB cable I need to safely connect Xbee to XCTU?

You need to look at how many wires they have. If they have 4 or 5 wires, then it is a standard USB cable. If it only has two, then it is a charging cable.

Hmmm. I just checked and the USB I am using does have 5 pins. Back to square one. I have ordered a new cable just in case the cable might be bad.
